Which dually should I use?

Hello! 100 lessons completed 150 lessons completed 200 lessons completed 250 lessons completed

Hi all - just hoping someone can advise me here. I am now in the fortunate position of having two dually halters I can use on my young mare, Tricka. The red one which I purchased for my shetland but doesn't fit him and the black one I previously purchased for my mare. I have discovered that the red one fits my mare but it is fairly snug fit being on the second largest whole on all straps and the discipline nose band doesn't have much "give" in it. On the other hand the black one fits snuggly on the second smallest whole but there is big excess on the discipline nose band - about 3 inches. She is responsive to both so I guess my main concern is which nose band is the better? Thanks if you have some thoughts.

Hi Maggie,
I discovered that you can change the length of the training noseband by tightening the under chin buckle and loosening the over nose buckle, or loosening the under chin buckle and tightening the over nose buckle - depending whether you are using the red or black and therefore need the training noseband with more or less room. (Rather than say having both the under and over buckles on the second hole, put one on 3rd hole and the other on the first hole). Picked this tip up when I did my introductory course!

Hi MaggieF and ruthy,
When fitting the Dually, try to have the nose band and the chin band approx. the same lenght, so that the band that connects them and goes over the neck is more or less at the middle of the muzzle. Important is also, that the noseband and the neckband, where they connect, leave enough room for the cheekbone. When fitting the Dually, check it for being snug enough by switching the neckband up and down/ back and forth, holding it at the height under the cheekbones. Don't forget that they tend to stretch, so check them when you have a fairly new Dually. You can wash the halter in the washingmachine, it shrinks a little bit, but will stretch after use.
The length of the trainingband might be a problem with young horses, that tend to grap the clip of your leadrope, if it dangles close to their mouth. There has to be some "give", so that the noseband is not tight, when no pressure is put on it.
It's not easy to describe, hope I didn't confuse you!
You'll find which Dually does the best job in the long run.

Hi MaggieF,
I'm sure you are very handy. Because of MY Stars small nose band, only 18 inches I have had to adjust many halters for her.
Better for the halter to be a little less snug than to tight, tightness will cause continuious pressure.
What you can do where the halter is too big is add another hole.
Because they are made from nylon you have to burn the hole or it will fray.
Use a hot nail to make the whole, this will seal it.
Make a few, our horses loose and gain weight, so we need to constantly adjust.
Hope this works for you.

Thank you so very much everyone for all this lgreat advice. It means that the black one is the correct one to use so that has been a great help.
