I was at a horse show, loading my horse that is a very green mustang. (we just went to show him a new place, not compete!)
He loaded great, but kept backing out. I had the dually halter on, and was not concerned. I just stayed patient.
SEVERAL people came over to "Help." ALL said, "I have a whip. That will get him on!"
PLEASE PEOPLE! STOP WITH THE WHIP!
I am teaching the horse!
As Monty says, "When you introduce pain to the situation, you are only CONVINCING the horse that they were RIGHT ALL ALONG!"
Vent over. Thanks!
Hi Jamie. Yeah, lots of us have had this same experience. You rant all you want - we, on the Uni, support you. However, you're ranting to the converted. Monty has endured decades of people dismissing him & his ideas. He didn't confront these people. He took strength from his convictions, supported by those who either loved him or agreed with him. Confrontation with believers in violence will fail. Your best choice is to succeed - return with your mustang, partnership intact and wipe the floor with these people in competition. Attribute your success to the superior benefits of Monty's methods. Actions speak louder than words. I have a home bred 2 year old - Kirk, who I am convinced will be exceptional & his full sister, who has become a yearling this week, who I hope will help me change the attitude of my local riding club in due course. I've been on the club committee since 1982. My attitudes have changed since then but, when I found Monty I also found I had much further to go. That's years ago & my attitude is still improving. Cheers, Jo.
"Confrontation with believers in violence will fail." I agree so much with that. Monty's method is so efficient that I find the best answer is to let the horses answer.

Yesterday I went jogging with my filly, a friend and her horse. It was a first for my girl so after 15 minutes of trotting she needed a moment to breathe (and me too...). My friend asked if she could lead her and before I knew it she just whacked her on the side with her stick and turned to me all smiles saying "see, she can trot"...
.
We switched horses back and as i wasn't saying anything she said "well a little smack is not gonna traumatise her and you'll get your way, look at my horse he's not traumatised!!" At which point, in an effort to prove how violence was ok, she raised her stick to her horse's head who reacted by jumping away from her in a panick...

Respect 1 - Violence 0
.
:D
Always amazes me that those who think it is ok to hit a horse also feel they can do it to any horse even if they don't own it. Lack of respect for both horse and owner.

Well done for staying patient Jamie, slow is fast always and when they still haven't learnt that a horse can be loaded without whips or ropes, you'll be taking your chap and parading him around heads high :D
.
When we recently rescued Seaton back, he'd had a traumatic time in the lorry prior, so we just took out time. Dually on, but no pressure, he pooped himself 3 times within 10 minutes before he followed me in willingly. All the time in the world for our horses, and it always pays off :D
