Hi, I already own a mare with a foal at foot and a gelding who have been introduced and now live out happily together. Last week I bought a weanling who was to be gradually introduced to the gelding, and would then accompany the other foal during weaning so that they could play and grow up together. Good plan? I thought so..
The introduction to the gelding wasn't too bad, side by side in the stable, side by side in parallel fields then together in a field when there were no signs of aggression. Although there was a bit of sending away, I understand that the weanling has to earn his place among the others and so allowed him to be accepted by the gelding over a few days.
Today however all hell broke loose when the mare and foal crashed through the fences into the geldings and weanlings field. The foal was very inquisitive and went straight over to check out the new horse, and before I knew it both mare and gelding were running the poor thing round the field, and basically into the ground. Luckily (and unbelievably) no one was hurt, but I brought the weanling and gelding in for the night to try and get a better understanding of what I should do tomorrow. After a while of running and chasing they did settle down and the weanling seemed to learn his place among his new herd, but it was impossible to leave them out with broken fences. Tomorrow I will repair and secure the fences, but I was wondering wether I should keep him with the gelding or let them back out all together? Although it was heartbreaking to watch, I do believe the worst of it is over, but I dont think either of us could go through that again if it isn't! Please help!
