TOP Pole Training

I worked on TOP Pole training by myself, ensuring I kept the horse's head towards me.  I used a store-bought square-shaped dust mop where the mop head which swiveles up and down.  My horse moved away from pressure quiet well.  Finding a pole exactly like the one Monty uses might be difficult, otherwise I hope to find the parts to make one like the one Monty uses.  Does Monty include a TOP Pole in his tack shop?  Thank you for your guidance.

Hi. I haven't seen a TOP pole amongst Monty's inventory - I think you need to make your own. Sounds to me like you've made a good start. What might be helpful would be to add extra padding to a shop bought mop; a greener horse would be more resistant initially, just to be absolutely sure that no pain is caused. Also, the handle would be presumably only attached in a central spot so before adding extra padding add a couple of struts bolted into the head & pole. You would need to drill holes to do that & the extra padding ( towels folded up & covered over would do the trick ) would pad over the bolt heads. I believe Monty achieves a horse that moves off pressure of the lightest kind so it sounds to me that you have made a great start but still have some work to do. Cheers, Jo
