Hi
Today Lola and I walked to the school without any jumps or issues so really really pleased and we are doing our lead rein training which is going ok whilst walking but I think I must be doing something wrong because when we stop Lola's bottom swings sideways so instead of just standing beside me at my shoulder she is twisted round sideways on ( I hope this makes sense it's a bit like the horse in the walking like a crab lesson) I have watched the learning to lead and the sweet spot lessons over and over but this is not mentioned so don't know how to correct it
Any thoughts?
Wendy

Hi, I assume Lola is a young pony. What about schooling with the dually facing her. Use the gestures for her to stand and when she swings out - PICNIC! Once established facing her the fact that you are leading her should be irrelevant - she knows how to lead and stand still. Hope you have great fun & Lola too.
I see this a lot with my clients Wendy and is usually about timing and positioning. Owner stops horse keeps moving/swings out. This can happen for following reasons I find (1) Young horse doesn't realise he needs to stop - a tiny nudge and rlease on the Dually as you stop can help give him the cue till he understands that when your feet stop, he stops. (2) Owner is walking like a crab herself, slightly turned in to the horse - you'll be amazed how often this happens; it started from "keeping an eye on where he is" and then became a habit - get someone to watch you walking forwards and make sure you are full forwards - hips, kness, shoulders, smile in the line, horses nose by your shoulder but not tucked behind you. If he is too close lift your right arm up and out to keep him out away from you. (3) You stop, horse keeps moving, you try to correct him but he has already travelled to far past you so he ends up crabbed/across you etc. If you stop, the second his nose goes past your shoulder, remind him with the dually and put him back to where he should be - I find in early training owners are slow to correct and the horse has already travelled half a body length before they realise he should have stopped and then correcting him ends up with the crabbing. Hope that helps to be going on with :-)
Hi
Thank you for your comments yes jo Lola is only 3yrs and is a rescue pony who had a very bad start to life so we have spent time just building her trust and now just started schooling with the dually but it's a huge learning curve for all of us and I think Vicci you are probably right I think my body position is not right and I'm probably not quick enough with mŷ responses I will work on this we are still smiling about getting into the school for a schooling session as the walk to the school has been a issue I must keep reminding myself it's baby steps
Thanks again for your advice it's all been so helpful I've never had a rescue or young pony before so it's all a real challenge but one we are really enjoying
