Hey all !

A friend of mine owns a gelding and sometimes we go for rides together. I've noticed that everytime we meet Dayka will sniff his nose, let out a high pitched whine and strike with one or both her legs. I was wondering if that was normal behaviour for a mare when meeting a male.

She likes to throw her legs A LOT when she plays out in the field so i was wondering if that was just her personnality or if that's a hormonal thing (i would describe her as very hormonal). She loves using her front legs to push her little donkey friend too but has never struck at him.

(fyi she never does that towards or around people, just with that specific gelding who is the only one she's ever met since i've had her).

Thanks :)

Hi Lucie;  It`s absolutely normal with mares and geldings or stallions.  This is their way of communicating receptivity to the closeness [body positioning of the other horse].  They are saying "you are too close at the moment and I am not comfortable with you in my space"--or "not tonight Henry"  Geldings some times do this with other geldings, but that`s  dominate tendencies being displayed.  This demonstrates many things on how horses` operating systems work with the number one thing  being that of the SEEKER.  CURIOSITY IS A CLOSE SECOND.  If we are really focused with our attempts when training, we can use these tendencies to help their learning of our intention.

On a another note, I wanted to commit on your video that showed Dayka being treated by body message practitioner.  That last sequence, with Dayka`s head down at your knees.  This is the RELAXED MIND AND BODY THAT WE SHOULD ALL SEEK WHEN TRAINING OUR HORSES.  Sometimes it takes several minutes  to get them into that zone, but well worth it when happens.  That is the time that the MAGIC HAPPENS.

I hope this finds you well
Bud
