Settling into a new home

Hello!

I have just bought a horse and brought her to her new home on Saturday. She still seems to be a little etchy about it and hasn't yet settled in. When I walk her to places she's seen before she acts as if she hasn't seen any of it before. When I went to view her and pick her up at her old place she was almost bombproof and now just about every little sound she jumps out of her skin at! It's not a bad thing, but instead of directing her attention towards me she looks at everything else, I had to do join up with her 3 times to get her to listen to me instead of looking at every little thing around her and looking like a llama when walking her around! Lol i don't think it's a bad thing but just looking for some advice on getting her settled in a bit easier/quicker? Thanks

Blimey Lani, give her a chance!!! haha It's all new and scary to her, horses don't generalise very well, just because it was ok in the other place won't make the scary thing ok in the ne wplace, she will need to check it out and make sure. Just keep walking out with her, let her investigate, she will learn to trust you. All she needs is time.

Hello!

yes i know haha just asking! she is settling in fine i was only asking how to make it more comfortable for her, thats what i meant lol after succeeding in joinup she was alot more relaxed and listening to me so i will continue with joinup, etc and introduce her to new things, i take her for walks up and down to meet the other horses and walk her around the place, shes just aclimatising :)

Hi HelpILoveHorses,
Ofcourse I don't know how far her old place is from where she's now with you, but could you find out what kind of hay she was fed, what kind of creepfeed she had and sometimes bringing water from "home" makes horses settle in easier. Monty describes giving horses certain electrolites in their water before travelling, then continuing them for a while, when in new surroundings. This is too late in your case, but familiar smells and tastes can help.
Even bringing an old rug from a familiar horse could help her.
Doing Join-Up seems a good foundation for her, so give her time and maybe she could find some nice horse-companion to bond with. She misses her old herd and feels lost for the moment. As Vicci says, give her time to settle in.

There is a good herbal plug in diffuser and spray you could use which might help her to relax too. It's for dogs, cats, horses and seems to work on us people too! I know you can get it as vets in the UK not sure if you can in the states but there might be something similar. We use it at our vet practise- small animal, and had good responses and I used to spray it on my tack before I rode out and it seems to help. I will say I ran out before my accident!lol
