Can anyone tell me about the practice of tying sandbags to horses feet? I have never heard of it before today and was wondering if anyone here has?
TIA :)

Haven't heard of it either, and I can't imagine why someone would do it....improvised hobbles, maybe?
Good grief, I've not heard of this either, I am intrigued! Where did you hear about it Tia? I have a sneaky feeling its not for a good reason but I will reserve judgement until I know more! ;-)
I've heard at times that some put weights on the feet of Tennessee Walking Horses (that kind of breed anyway) to enhance their high knee movements, but I'm not sure it is sandbags.
Not sure it's an approved way of training them either.
I've heard of sandbags being placed on the saddle to get the horse used to a weight there before introducing a rider. I've also heard of them being placed on horses backs to weigh them down then taken off before they are height measured so they can compete in certain classes (not sure how much of an old wives tale that is though). But I don't know about tying them to horses feet - to slow them down and stop them running away perhaps? Either way, I would be intrigued to know!
Ahaha! :) "TIA" is short for "thanks in advance". My name is Rahni :)
I had it mentioned to me recently and I couldnt think what it would be for and couldnt find anything Googling it either. So just asked here.
Kicki, Ive heard of putting heavier shoes on horses for that reason.
Interesting emlaw. I'll let you all know if I discover anything further.
Thanks everyone!
New one to me too. Doesn't sound good. Improvised hobbles seems the best idea. Great is someone can find out!
