Rodeos

I just read an article here in New Zealand about some animal rights activists wanting to ban rodeos as they feel they are exploiting horses. The SPCA and the vets disagree and say the horses are treated well and it's a good forum for the stockmen to show off their skills. I am not a western rider, and have never been to one and I'm not really interested in going either, personally I just don't like the idea - what do people on the forum think? Are they cruel? What purpose do they serve?

I believe the SPCA and the vets already said it. "The horses are treated well and it's a good forum for the stockmen to show off their skills.

Just for the record I am not a western rider either. My thing is trailriding.

I could not help to notice that you said that you have never been at a rodeo and personally you just don't like the idea.

My suggestion would be to make an informed decission on whether you like the idea of Rodeo's or not. The best way to get an idea of what is going on at Rodeos is to at least go to one rodeo and then base your opinion on what you have seen with your own eyes.

I know for a fact that Monty Roberts himself won a few world champion ships at Rodeo events.

Let us say the animal rights activists succeeds in banning rodeo events. In that case a lot of horses will suddenly be without a purpose. I wonder if the animal rights activists would be able to look after the thousands of horses which in the event of the banning of Rodeos is going to be dumped on the market or neglected.

The thing is there are cruel people every where. What about the trainers who hit their show jumpers on the legs to teach them to tuck those legs up? Should show jumping be made illegal or should we get rid of the cruel trainers and riders? Should horse racing be banned because a few cruel trainers are injecting their horses with drugs or they have cruel training methods.

I do not think so.

Perhaps I should have made myself clearer - I am not saying that I think they are cruel per se, just wondering what other people think. I don't have any particular opinion as I have never been to one, and I don't like the idea simply because it doesn't appeal to me to sit and watch. Nor would I be particularly interested in going to watch showjumping or horse racing, as a spectator I find both a bit boring to be honest. I'm more of a doer than a watcher, and much prefer to be out riding a horse myself, enjoying the countryside. but I'm still curious to find out what it is that bothers the activists about rodeos and what people think in general.

Hello!

Hey, so, I'm a vegan, and I'm quite familiar with the cruelties from rodeos. The horses are typically treated fine, it's the calves and cattle used in the roping event that are horrendously cruel.

Has a lot of good information regarding rodeos, how they are cruel, and to what animals. Check it out if you want, but there are some graphic images (calves necks being snapped by being roped to hard, etc.)
