Hello!

Ebrahim;

I know that it looks like I have hijacked the site here with responses, but what the heck eh? As with any athlete, it is the inherent skill of the animal and subsequent training and it has nothing to do with wraps. If you have checked the videos of jumpers and checked their "landings" you will realize immediately that you should not be wrapping any jumper, so as to not affect the "flexion" required on landing.
Boots, yes, if needed, wraps no. I have noticed that a lot of the owners of the jumpers that I am around like to appear "au courant" so gear up their horses just to "look cool" and do not need a lot of what they use on their horses.

Cheers,

Paul

I see the wraps as protection of the skin.

guys what i meant with rapping was people hit horses with fences when they jump so they jump higher the next time they scare and they dont hit the fence but i want to know , while buying a horse, how can i understand that a horse is naturally is jumping so high or it is because of rapping ?
cheers

Sorry for the misunderstanding...
I don't think that you can see the difference.
Let me add something: I often think about that problem. "Rapping" means "negative instant consequence" to teach the horse to not touch the obstacle. I wonder whether it is possible to train them by using a "positive instant consequence". I have tried it but I have not enough experience yet to validate the effect.

When I was a young woman at a competion riding a lovely palomino gelding, the Master of the Hunt of Middlesberg, Virginia wanted to know if he was forsale? I said he would have to ask the owner. He then asked if he kicked at dogs, and he needed to be "Poled" because he was lazy. "Poling" at that time was asking a horse to take a larger than normal jump, the top pole was covered in tacks do that when he rapped the pole he buggered his knees. They felt this would teach him to draw his knees up to his chest to avoid the touching the pole. The owner said no to the sale and and Goldigger went on to became a truly lovely jumper with many ribbons and trophies.

Thank goodness the owner said no; what a terrible thing to do; i really do despair at the human capacity for viciousness sometimes! My Dad used to tell me that he met a racehorse trainer once who used to lay hedgehog skins (spines up!) along the top of the jumps for the same reason. Completely senseless and ineffective; how to make horses afraid to jump in one easy lesson.

I suggest one of the things you can do ebrhaim is ask your vet when they do the vet check to especially look for these signs - there may be scar tissue and evidence of old injuries on the legs.

mssmith and viccihh1 your comments and the very idea of rapping makes me very angry and frustrated - why are people so stupid and cruel? The other day I watched one to the older (22 years) gang ho riders from our Pony Club jumping his horse. At the time I just though he was being stupid and cruel but perhaps he had heard of rapping and was trying it. I have never hear of it before. He was a big tall guy riding a thoroughbred which was only about 15 hands or so high - looked small under him anyway. Initially he had his horse jumping at a Grade 2/1 level and the horse was doing gallantly and just managing to clear them. Then he re-adjusted all the jumps up about another 30cm/10". I thought there is no way that horse can jump those and sure enough it couldn't but he kept forcing his horse through them even though the poor horse was knocking them all down with his legs. I was furious but knew it was pointless saying anything as another man was helping him from the ground and I would just get abused by both of them. I had already had a very rude, brash response from this young guy when I suggested he should slow down after he had hooned his vehicle and float close to my float terrifying Tricka. I have requested that he never be allowed into our Adult Riding Club but apparently he already has such a bad reputation there is no way he would be given membership thank goodness!

I can't believe it. Does rapping even work??? It will just make the horse hate and fear you. It is soooo mean. Somebody make it stop

Oh, it works! Or it would have stopped a long time ago.
.
And, no, correctly done, it will not make the horse hate and fear you - he won't even understand where it comes from. He just feels a rap on his legs and is made to think he erred in his judgment of how high he needed to lift them to clear the fence. So, as you can see, it's a very insidious method: very effective. And, yes, mean too.
I am NOT in favor of using it - and it is against the rules (and the law) here in Sweden - just making an objective (if disgusted) note on its "uses".
.
But poling a horse is the "mildest" form of rapping. Far worse then are the methods where they put nails or other sharp objects in the horses boots! Or blister the skin on their legs :(
A retailer was caught (decades ago) at the annual Scandinavium Horse Fair here in Gothenburg (during the World Cup-events)selling these "prepped" boots. It stirred up quite a commotion, I can tell you. The police came and the retailer was banned from the Fair immediately.
