So I have been watching all of Monty's lessons over and over again and loving every minute of them. I was really getting everything to sink in. Then I watched the videos on the Catching your horse in the field videos. While watching I got confused by only one thing. Why is Monty telling the guy to look the horse in the eye's when it goes to move away? Isn't that what were trying to prevent from happening? From previous videos we are told that locking eyes on the horse means "Go Away!" So could someone please explain to me why we are to do this.
Thank You!
This is confusing isn't it. I will need to re check the video on this one. When. I go to catch my horses I will will occasionally glance up at them but I tend to keep my eyes down and my body language calm and re- assuring.
Maggie, Ty for the reply. Yeah, I would be doing the same and for the most part that's what Monty tells James (I believe is his name) to do. Then at one point he tells him to look the black one in the eyes if she goes to move. Maybe it was an Ugh Oh that never got caught in editing. :S
Hi Trev
It's to make the horse think it was your decision to move. If the horse moves away from you first they are boss over you, if you follow they have moved your feet. So to keep that leadership if you see them going to walk away with the slightest raise of the foot, send him/ her away with that quick flash of eyes on eyes, this turns their movement into your decision to move maintaining your leadership.

OH Thank You Mel! Now that makes more sense. I was just looking at it from the wrong perspective. Thank you so very much for that!
:D Welcome.
