The other day when I went over to the horses, they were way out in the back pasture and didnt hear the horn, so didnt come, I had to go get them. I went out and got their attention and they came along with me-until we got close to the trees and brush near the barn, then they started acting spooky, and came close to me to get there. I heard something back in the brush, couldnt tell what it was but they didnt like it. Decided to just play with them awhile instead of riding, and took Princess out on the leadrope toward the pond, and she kept stopping and not wanting to move, which is very unlike her, then suddenly she got ahead of me and gently pushed me back, saying sorry, but you arent going any farther. Having learned long ago to trust my horses, I took her back to the barn, brushed both of them again and let them go. They wandered out a bit, then spooked and took off running. I still had no idea what was bothering them. Yesterday Jim was off work so we went riding out in the big pasture where there arent any trees or brush, and I saw a bear track, so guess thats probably what it was. The horses said it was gone, though. It was Princess's first time riding out there, and she was wonderful. When Emmett spooked at some deer, which live there and he knows it, she watched him, looked at the deer, and decided they werent anything she had to be concerned about. She is a great little horse, but I never expected her to be protective at her age. But she knew there was something there that wasnt nice, and decided she didnt want me to get any closer to it. I would have expected her to shy away and try to run back to the barn, not just gently push me back and then walk, although a bit faster, back to the barn.

What a lovely story - you and Princess must have a really good bond. Have you read the Monty Roberts story where he joined up with a wild mare who had recently had a foal weaned off her? After Join Up when the saddle was brought in to the round pen she attacked it and went a bit wild, so thinking he might be attacked too he made to leave the pen but stumbled onto his hands and knees near the wall. Instead of attacking him, however, she tried to protect Monty from it, he believes that she was protecting him as though he was her foal as she stood between him and the saddle dripping milk on him. I saw a TV programme where he recounts this incident, I think it might be one of the Horse and Country TV episodes.
Havent read it, no. Or seen it either, have to look for it. Sounds fascinating. Thanks.
I adopted a wild mare once who was very pregnant, and one night a raccoon stole one of my ducks, so the next night I slept outside by the coirral where I could see and hear if it came back, and that mare stood as close to me as she could get, all night, as if she was watching over me. I always believed she was.
