Hi all !

in the spring Dayka will have her first visit with the dentist, are there any exercices that I could do to prepare her so that she doesn't worry when he can handles her ?

Thanks ! :)

Hi Lucie. Rasping teeth involves having the mouth opened with a metal, ratcheted gag. My Humphrey really panicked with metal in contact with his teeth - old, bad memories. However, I came up with a simple solution that the vet & I tried a month later. The gag has 2 surfaces that fit over the upper & lower front teeth. When in use these surfaces are subject to pressure but not too much friction. I padded the gag with folded kitchen paper towels held in place with squares of duck tape not inside the mouth. The towels encased the mouthpieces so the tape didn't contaminate the appliance. Humphrey was significantly calmer, standing without restraint, whereas a month before he panicked & insisted on walking forwards. Your mare will need to be really comfortable with having her muzzle & mouth handled. Using a wooden spoon handle with drops of honey on it would build the association of mouth handling & pleasurable experience. Hope this helps. Cheers, Jo.
