New to MR Online University. Experienced MR methods when I hired a local MR trained trainer to work with an abused rescue horse with incredible results.
Find the info that orphaned horses fail to learn the language of Equus fascinating. We often lack background info on rescued horses; so when they fail to respond typically, we tend to label them untrainable or stupid.
My gaited mare was discarded & rescued as a starvation foal at 4 months by the Sheriff's Office. She is extremely dominant with horses, but loving and compliant with humans (who discarded her). I surmise that she failed to learn the language of Equus, but she developed enhanced survival skills. Because she had minimal human handling as a foal, she has no fear of humans. Conversely, my Arabian was abused by humans and mistrusts them. But she is subservient in the herd. Interesting.
I have had some experience with orphaned/rejected puppies and a couple of foals and as you say, it is a fascinating issue. Neither learn their own language very well at first, however, I have dicovered that it is possible to reach a compromise and help these youngsters undergo a sort of 'combination' training whereby they learn it as a second language (just like we learn to speak a second one!). I have been lucky enough to be part of fascinating journey of an abandoned shire foal (mum died when foal was two weeks) and he is now 18 hands high so has to be well behaved!! Monty always warns agains hand reared horses and I agree, however there is hope for them. I often find the same with dogs - they are invariably snappy and not good with other dogs as they don't understand their own language properly - a consequence more often than not of removing them from their litter too soon and not having learnt the manners of group work/play from their litter mates. This aspect is less of an issue with horses as they are solo born however they MUST be around other horses as much as possible so they can learn but they can come in for a hard time from other horses and/or be very pushy so it is a tricky balance.
