nervous yearling

Hello! 100 lessons completed 150 lessons completed 200 lessons completed 250 lessons completed

i have a very nervous yearling, one day he will allow you to groom him the next he is acting like its never been done before, his dam was nervous until i did join up she is now very trusting, i am going to try it with him but he panics when away from his field mate a little filly of same age they have been together since birth. i recently had him gelded and he seems to have got worse with his nervousness, he has always been handled gently,, can anyone give me advice on how to proceed with getting him braver.he is 14months old and stands at around 14hhs.thanks

Being gelded sometimes increases their nervouseness for a little while - lets face it, you'd be nervous if I suddenly came and chopped your bits off ;-) The good news is, it does pass if you carry on being the same reliable kind person towards him. If you are going to do Join Up with him I suggest maybe having the filly somehwere in sight, not so far that they are calling to each other but not so near that she is distracting. However, it is also important to start getting him used to being away - sometimes its better to have three horses together so that you don't get this overbonding but I do appreciate you may not have a 3rd horse available. Another thought: maybe hes just not keen on being groomed, contrary to popular belief not all horses do like it, try using just a soft gloved hand all over him rather than any brushes and see if that helps. Skin sensitivity can vary day to day which could explain his varying mood. Also, check your own mood/emotional levels, is he synchronising with you? (good and bad days) ...just afew thoughts to be going on with :-)

We must really get the like button on here, take this as a 'like' Vicci :D
We had the same with our BamBam, he was a mess when we got him and everyone, including the vet that signed his passport thought he was gelded. Season comes and we know for sure he's not a gelding. a different vet did the gelding for us but for a good month or so he was more nervous than normal. As vicci says be the same reliable friend that you have been to him already, he'll come to trust you. x
