I am a proud and happy breeder/owner of a SWB gelding who will turn 2 years in May. He is sweet-natured and lovely to handle in every way, but occasionally, when he wants to demonstrate his annoyance with me or just wants to play, he tries to bite me in the shinbone or foot. Much in the way horses do to each other when they play or scuffle.

I've lived by the rule never to hit him so whenever he has tried some shenanigans I have followed Monty's advice to bump my foot on his leg/hoof to shift his attention.

This works to a certain degree, but Mr.Smartypants are now anticipating this, so he makes sure my legs can't reach his legs, or move them away the moment he senses that I move the foot. (You should see his expression! It's a perfect equivalent to sticking out his tongue at me. *LOL* )

I can always stomp my foot hard - mimicking his mother when she was extremely angry with him and that was her "last warning" before getting physical. It works very well, but that feels like shouting too loud and I'm not sure it stops the actual behavior more than for the moment.

Grateful for any suggestion!

I dont have any suggestions Kicki I just wanted to say that I am so happy for you for having the opportunity to experience all of this. It simply sounded adorable and I can only envision what it looks like. Wished I could see the whole deal. You should do a youtube video and post it here for all of us to see:-)

*LOL* horselover! Yeah, I guess it goes with the old adagio that you never have a camera when you need it.

And, yes, it sure has been an experience to follow a foal from embryo to being born and on. It's been a true adventure - and while it isn't always fun and games, it is never ever boring! ;)

My young Freisain used to the same thing! He is now going on 5 and STILL likes to play...He has plenty of friends in the pasture to play with, an older mare he bosses around and 2 very opinionated mini donkeys! So, what I do is take a riding dressage whip with me, and shake it under his nose, and drive him away from me right away! Some weeks he is very good, sometimes it takes a few times and then he quits, but stay consistant and he will get it! I promise. My guy checks with me every day to make sure he can depend on me to lead the way! He is a BIG clown, into everything!
Just keep him out of your space until he acts like a behaved little boy...

Hi J!
Thanks for your advice, and sorry I missed it before.
I love the picture I got in my mind from "2 very opinionated mini donkeys". *LOL*
