Napping in a school

Please upload your photo

Hi it have a rising 5 nfx who has started napping really badly in the grass school. He is becoming uncontrollable with it in his determination to get to gate! Does anyone have any suggestions on how to help this as he is fab on the ground and out hacking !

Hi Lizziedeuchar,
A lot of horses have this habit of wanting to go to the gate, some more controlable, others less. What you could do, is to make the gate area a "work"-zone, with many small circles and other exercises, and the far end of the arena a "leisure"- zone, with no extra work and later a loose rein.
Try to think of work versus rest, this way you'll help him choose the road of least resistance.
There is a series here on the Uni about "Cutting corners", this might help you get the idea of how to approach the gate-napping your horse shows.
Stay safe and let us know how you're doing!

Hi, I'm riding a rising 4 mare who would nap at the gate quite badly, not only wouldn't she go past but she would rear, I took her to the other end of the school for about a week on a circle. Yes she still hankered towards the gate through the middle of the school but I had the space for her to move towards it. Luckily at this point in her education she wasn't that confident so I had someone in the middle of the circle, as if she was being lunged. Lots of halts to get them listening to you. I always when I finish with any horse in the school halt facing anywhere but the gate in the middle. Hope that makes sense. Good luck, it's perseverance & repetition.
