My mini mare just lost her colt last night sometime. It was sudden. He was not ill or had any ingeries. I just need help with the mare. What should I do to make this a little easier on her. She was calling for him all morning and kep going back to were he passes. We barried him and now she just keeps looking for him, I can understand why. I have her locked in a stall and giving her extra feed and oats.
What can I do to help her through her loss?
There are certain Bach flower remedies which help with that sort of thing. One of the remedies,Genetian, may help. Genetian is supposed to help with a horse's depression like when its baby dies. Also, Honeysuckle is supposed to help horses who are upset over the loss of a baby. there are probably a few more. You can buy them online from various websites. i havent used many myself, but have heard great reports from others who have :) hope this info helped. hope your mare feels better soon.
Sad story ,the herbal remedies sound very good.I only know about when a lamb dies they skin it and pop the skin over an orphaned lamb so the sheep accepts the other baby.I wonder if like in nature had you left the dead foal in the field for a day or two if she would have accepted its death?Grizzly I know, but interesting.
eewww! but yeh i think i've heard of that too! Yuck. i think i've heard of mare's dragging their dead foals around the paddock for even a few days after their death. then they finally move on- thank goodness. :( the poor mummys :'(
