OK all - I just completed the last course on "Gentling the wild horse." It was AMAZING. We were fortunate to have Monty there the WHOLE time. He was kind enough to give Thor and I several riding lessons to help with the bolting.
So -here is what we did. I needed to breathe and stay relaxed. Softly encourage him in to a canter transition. Reins TOTALLY loose the whole time.
When he went too fast, we made 5-6 small circles, keeping the canter. Then we straightened out. Kept going until he went too fast again. Then more circles. We did about a million circles for the first two days. Then, he GOT it. By the end we were just cantering along on a loose rein. As I am a three day eventer and would eventually need contact, we would introduce it, and then just drop it. Pick it up, go once around, then DROP it. What a change. Thanks to Monty for being so helpful and patient with me. He is a master.
Takeaways- slow down your adrenaline. Breathe. Hum in the places he would consistently get fast. Let him make the mistake, then correct it. Make him pay the price for his mistake.
Feel free to ask any questions!

Wow Jamie, what a wonderful experience for you and Thor! What a wonderful example of how light hands are a must. I have three questions please (and anything else you'd like to share would be really appreciated!).
:
(1)When he started to speed up you took him off a straight ahead and into circles; as you had no bit contact did you neck rein/turn your body or use legs or ...? to get him into the circles. What did you do before you started working with Monty on this issue?
:
(2) When you started to engage contact again how long did you keep it before you dropped it, I know you send once around, but how long in time was this? I've been to Flag is UP and it depends which arena you are talking about - one is a lot bigger than the other and both are bigger than the round pen - I assume you mean the larger school? :-)
:
(3) Do you feel you are lighter in your hands now than you were before? What other changes are there in you as a result of this great experience?

Many thanks
