Jumping out of his field

Hello!

We bought a lovely 16.1 bay gelding in December, unfortunately though he has the habit of jumping out. The first time we put him out we put him on his own but with horses in the fields either side; he jumped into the next door field and back again. We now make sure he is in company, with lots of hay, as there isn't much grass here at the moment, but approximately once a week he continues to do it. Luckily he is at a livery yard, so there are always people about, but not so luckily he has ended up making himself lame. He even jumped out of the school when we tried join up on him. Is there anything we can do to stop him?

So sorry th hear you have this problem, Jessica. Uggs used to be naughty and jump fences too until he ended up injuring himself badly by doing it. He had a whole year out. Do hope your boy hasn't damaged his leg too badly. Only thing I can suggest is nice high fences and electric tape. You may be able to put extenders on the current posts then run the electric tape around about 40cm or a foot above the current top of the fence.

Hello!

Thanks Maggie. We had a horrible day today, I put him out with horses in the paddocks each side, but after having a roll he started cantering up the edge of the field looking at the fence line to jump. Having thought it would be nice for him to get some air on his back I had to catch him and take him for a walk and a graze on the lead rein. I'll talk to our yard and see if we can get some electric tap put up high on one of the paddocks.

Jessica I'm a bit muddled, is he "with horses" in that he is physically in the same enclosure (i.e. they can touch each other) or is he "with horses" as in next door to others in a different enclosure?
