HI ALL,
I have recently bought a new horse who is nervy and not had much done with her. I don't have a round pen or access to one but is Join up achievable in a 20 x 40 arena???
Thanks In advance.

Hi, yes it is BUT you have to work a lot harder and you really have to watch your positioning and watch out for stopping down in the corners. I would put poles across the corners so you don't have sharp right angles and if it all possible halve the arena but only if you can halve it well - I did it with jumps and poles once and the horse just jumped the poles haha If the horse is nervy just watch you don't send her thundering round in a gallop - the straight sides of the arena can do that sometimes, nice and steady.
I agree with all vicci has said.
you definitely don't want the corners as some will just stop straight into the corner, they don't seem to find their way round & out of it.
You could try building a wall across the arena with straw bales as long as it's high enough, but that will depend on who else uses the school of course.
thanks :) will see what i can do to halve it :) x
if you can't get to half the school it's still ok to do it in a full size school, remember to keep eye contact the whole time until you want join up and if she gets distracted or goes into corners, make a sound. I use 'het' no real spelling for it, but it's a sharp sound that brings their attention back to you.
I've still not finished my round pen, so I do school and field join ups.
