I love western but i really want to know how to train an english horse western such as neck reining, easy stops and even slide stops, spin by neck reining etc. please excuse me if im saying these wrong as i am not very knowledgable in the western scene. i just love watching how most horses are so happy with western as they are allowed their full neck, there is hardly any bit contact, etc. could someone please tell the basics of how to train a horse mainly to neckrein, and also a fast stop. if monty has any of the video how tos of these please explain what they are called, thanks!!! btw my mare is going beautifully, i havnt ridden her in around 5 weeks now or more and her hind legs are much much stronger, her trot is spreading out, her canter is alot better and she doesnt throw her head up anymore. i might ride her this weekend and see what she is like, if still sore, i wont.

Sounds like good progress. I am not a western expert by any means but I prefer to ride (on the rare occasion that I ride!)'western style' including two reins in one hand etc. What I will say is please please do not even think of teaching your mare sliding stops, pirouttes etc etc as the one thing I do know is they need VERY strong musculature structure at the back end. I will be interested to hear from those on here that are much more familiar with western than me and looking forward to learning a lot! If you have any doubts about how strong they need to be look at Montys horse Nice Chrome - I have met Chrome and believe me his back end muscles are a sight to behold :-)
Hi Help, As someone who is a 'stock rider' I'm still learning the western style myself. I agree with Vicci however that if your girl has concerns with her back legs, please do not attempt a sliding stop. My boy is pure QuarterHorse and solid as they come and as a 3 year old will do the occasional sliding stop when hooning around (and OMG I can't wait to get him back from the trainers so that I can ride him) but we will not be attempting anything like that for a while yet as he is still maturing. (Though had a photo shoot on Wednesday and while free running around the arena he launched himself over a 40cm jump without even thinking about it. I was cringing the whole time as I don't like him going over anything but trot poles while he is still so young).
Vicci that is so not fair. I met Monty while he was here in Australia a couple of months back but would love to go to his farm and meet his horses.
yeah i went to his presentation/clinic in brigadoon W.A :) i wanted to meet him but was too nervous hes like a celeb to me :/ The main things i want to teach her are neck reining and easy stopping, i didnt mean that i would teach her sliding stops as in big ones, more like little ones, hehe :) i just love how easy looking western horses are to "drive" aha also i want to teach her to neckrein because i would like to start riding her tackless :)
