Wild horses in Australia's national parks are being killed either through aerial culls or baiting. I am investigating whether programs can be run, under which young prison inmates can capture and domesticate these horses. Initial research suggests positive results in the US. Re-offending rates by inmates in these programs, dropped by 30 percent. Any comments much appreciated. The program would be skewed towards indigenous inmates who make up a large percentage of juvenile inmates...warren cross

To me it sounds like a great idea, will give them something to focus on and possibly improve their self esteem by having the trust of another who depends on them totally.
Hi wbc - what an interesting coincidence; I am also interested in this issue and am trying to find the time to explore this in more depth. The examples of this seems to be scattered and a mapping exercise would be really good. I have a faint recollection of Monty doing some work with Lompoc prison in this....have I imagine this, does anyone remember?

In the UK there is a Scottish YOI that works on dog training with inmates and here in North Wales we are in the middle of building a brand new prison and it would seem a good opportunity to be looking at this
Hi. This is a great idea, win win. Wild horses get a chance of new & useful life & broken people are given a unique opportunity to repair their damage. That sounds quite pompous but given the fantastic success Monty has had with victims of PTSI/D there are incredible opportunities, waiting for those with vision. Good luck w b c. Cheers, Jo.
That's a wonderful idea Warren. I know that NSW Thoroughbred Rehabilitation Trust here in Sydney uses in-mates (not juvies though) in their TB re-training program.
.
Where will you be basing your program/s?
Hi wbc and Vicci,
Monty and team made a video about this set on Palm Island, Australia. Please write me at debbie@montyroberts.com and we can explore ideas.
Thank you
