I have a new horse that was a therapy horse previously. Yesterday was the first day I rode him and I discovered that he has a fixation with barrels. No matter what I ask him to do if there is a barrel within his vision we make a beeline to it. No amount of pressure, kicking or reining can change his mind.
Today when we rode my only goal was to make it around the arena without stopping at the barrels. Eventually, I was able to accomplish this by doing small circles every time he headed toward a barrel. I think he got tired of just turning in circles every time he spotted one.
I'd like him to get the idea that when a rider is on his back it doesn't mean he has to work. How can I undo his therapy training? More importantly, how can I teach him how to have fun?

Great questions! Can you take him outside the arena? Its good you are establishing who controls the feet movements :)
I think it was a great idea to let him do small circles everytime he spotts one of the barrels. It is the same Monty does with a horse that like to cut the corners.
A good way to show him ho wto have fun while workng is normally to include small games. Sometimes they only need something new for their head.
Thanks for the comments. Currently, I am not riding him due to navicular problems. We've been working on some tricks to stimulate his mind. We've also been doing a lot of ground work. So, the love affair with barrels is not an issue for now. I look forward to being able to ride Hosea in the future.
