What I say to my friends who don’t understand why I’m doing this

Gut feeling

Hello!
Help, My horse seems confused about being ridden
She is spooky and then she full on panics and buck and bolts. I end up on the ground.
I want to take her back to basics starting with ground manners.
get her back checked, saddle checked and then restart her ridden work when she is happy.
The problem I have is the people around me think I should just get on and ride her through it
Which way is right
Many thanks

Hello Rebecca, I am a green old lady and somewhat new to the horse world, however, my old lady wisdom wants to tell you NOT to listen to what anyone else thinks! What does your heart tell you? I take weekly lessons and my instructor takes lessons. I don't think it's shameful to have a more experienced person help you with this situation. Listen to an expert and not the people around you, and most importantly, listen to your horse. Best wishes to you!

Hello!
Thank you for the reply Kathy,

She is a sweet horse who does well working with teens that have behaviour problems teaching them stable management,
I just want her to be happy and safe in her ridden work
I will listen to my horse
Many thanks

Hi Rebecca, I am a "slow but steady wins the race" kind of gal. My husband, on the other hand  is very confident. He is so confident that he took someone out on the trail with our horses a few days ago and they both wound up on the ground, with what we think are broken ribs. I feel like you...I want my horses to be happy. I also want my body to be healthy :) Best wishes to you! It's very cool that your horse helps teens with behavior issues. She must be an amazing gal!

Hi Rebecca & welcome to the Uni. Clearly your horse has some issues - to be well behaved enough to work with vulnerable people but have such a reaction to being ridden, it's fear & bullying through it will never resolve the root cause. The people around you have the wrong mindset to the right solution. What your horse needs is understanding, patience & really dogged determination to incrementally introduce her to equipment that doesn't hurt her. Once a comfort zone is established the idea of a rider can be gently added. Monty shows how this can be achieved in various lessons on the Uni. Study, learn to be the person your horse deserves. You have taken the first step by using this forum so, well done. Are the people around you offering their services for the 'riding through' solution? My guess is not - all talk! True strength follows the right path & isn't drawn along with the way of least resistance. Stay safe & strong - true to your horse & your beliefs. Cheers, Jo.
