Hello everyone. I am looking for some advice and some information that might help me with a new horse I just brought home. He is a gelding, about 6-7 years old gelded and a pure bred arabian. He is a nice horse, but I introduced him to my other mares and he was sort of ok at first with running around and staying away from everyone. My arabian mare that was from the same herd that he came from decided to go make friends. He then started exhibiting stallion like behavior. He cut her from the herd and wouldn't let her go back to them. If she did he would go after her and bring her back to the the far side of the large dry lot they're in at the moment. He wouldn't challenge the other older gelding and he didn't like the paint mares or the pony. He wouldn't let me get to close at first but I finally was able to catch him and lead him back out and put back in my round pen for now. Not sure what to do with him at this time. Does anyone have any suggestions for me?
Thanks
Holly
Hi Holly - it sounds as if he was cut late. Do you know how old he was when he was gelded? If not, it would be good to ask his previous owners so you know what you are dealing with. The other thing to think about how is how to introduce him to a group. Because he was thrown into a group he may have just honed in on someone familiar and then decided to set up a little herd of his own. Rather than throw him in with them all, the usual method would be to pair him up with a 'lesser ranked' - not the lead and not the bottom of the heap, about 2nd or 3rd - preferable a confident gelding in this case. Let them get to know each other and then reintroduce them both back to the herd. Good luck, I'm sure you'll get lots of support but I thought I'd start the ball rolling :-)
Thank you Vicci, I have called the previous owners to find out about his gelding to see what I could find out. Will let you know how things turn out.

I agree with vicci, take it very slowly & keep him separate for now, let him get used to the scent of the others first.
You may have an ongoing problem if he only had contact with other horses when he covered the mares.
My friend was sold a late cut gelding & she was a complete novice - totally unsuitable, but turnout wise, he was fine turned out with the mares as he'd always run out with his mares. You need to find out how he was kept too.
Just remembered, i know someone else who had a late cut show jumper, she had to keep him separate as he beat everything else up.
Hi Hollyberry and all,
So do I remember a gelding that was cut late, that never learned social behavior, because he had been kept apart from the herd for too long. He always seemed in a bad mood, when other horses came too close, and could not intergrate in any herd. Only when ridden, he was in good contact with his rider and could be taken to any show. People had been his only real contact in life, sad but true....
You might give it a try to intergrate him step by step in your herd, but I guess you're safer finding a companion for him and keep him apart from the mares.
Good luck,
Miriam
