Hi,
We have a horse at our barn that rushes/flies into her stable. No problem taking her out. She is very spooky, but I think mainly because she does not get ridden too much. Any suggestions to get rid of this bad and potentially dangerous habit? Thanks! Daphne

HI Daphne,
I hope I can offer some help to you! I would suggest watching Monty's "Load Up" video. Then I would do dually halter work including lots of backing up. Then when you bring her towards her stable door, maybe 10 metres away, stop and back her up, then come forward to 9 metres away, stop and back her up and continue to do this all the way up to her stable door. Then don't go in - back her away and then turning and lead her away, maybe go for a walk outside, before starting the procedure all over again. Then like Monty does with the problem loaders in the Load Up video, take her in incrementally, backing up each time.
Hope that helps, because I agree it is a dangerous habit if she runs over the top of the person leading her!
Good luck
Hi Daphne!
.
I think Ruthy already had some very good ideas, but maybe I can add some more ways to stop this dangerous habit.
.
Against the spookyness I can recommend Monty's DVD "Genteling Your Spooky Horse - A Young, Unhandled Horse" and lots of training with spooky objects, like plastic shopping bags, a large tarpaulin, walking through water, etc.
.
For her rushing into the stable I would recommend reading Monty's book "From My Hands to Yours", especially the part about the "Barn-Sour Syndrome" and "Separation Anxiety".
.
If you do not have the DVD and/or the book buy it or borrow it from a friend or the next library/video rental store.
.
Hope I could help.
.
Best wishes from Hamburg, Germany!

Thank you ladies for that advise. I will definitely try it out and do the research. At least I have something to go on!
