Dually Halter Leading Question

Hello! 100 lessons completed
Hello again all! I have a question about using the dually halter. I've started my boy with the halter and we've been through all the dually dance steps and I think he's doing great! It's so fun to see him improve every time! I am running into one problem and I wanted to see how some of you out there deal with it or if it's come up for you before. Because of where the schooling ring is when I am leading him I feel like it pulls his head to my arm. What I mean by that is when he comes up to the right position or we stop his nose is literally touching my arm (and yes I promise there is slack in the line, I'd say about two and a half to three feet). I am worried that if I don't correct this right he will end up trying to lean on me, or worse if he spooks he will be so close to my body that he will hurt me even if he does spook away from me. I've been trying to just use the halter to move his head over when we stop but he just comes right back like a magnet. Any ideas on how to break this habit, or should I just keep doing what I'm doing until he gets that I like him beside me just not that close to me? Thanks in advance for any tips or ideas!

Hi Meg. You have the same issue I have with Kirk - he's fab on the Dually, does everything right, learns from our mistakes BUT when something's new, different, exciting - like going to the trailer to come home from the winter fields, he bombs along ( way too fast for my old legs & lungs ) & when I pull on the schooling ring he edges sideways making it worse, for me anyway. I see why this happens - my hand is not under his chin so my pull is sideways more than back. He's doing exactly what I'm asking him to. Problem 1, he doesn't get excited often & do this. Problem 2, how to fix it? OK, I've caused this by not being right. We've started using the schooling ring on the other side, I've not been letting him speed up at all & it seems to be working - he's not edging away ( so my pulls must be straighter ) & shows no inclination to lean in on me. Hope this helps. Cheers, Jo.
