I took my mare to Rodbaston College in Staffordshire-England last October. Having only had my mare a matter of months I discovered she was cow phobic. 'Calypso' my mare was so frightend that she would snort, spin, run backwards and at her worst she would rear. It terrified me and I didn't want her to endure this experience each time we hacked out. I realised that I had taken on a problem horse but one that I was willing to work with and take time to help.
Monty completed a demo on Calypso and it was amazing to see here reactions, especially with the heart monitor attached to her. To cut a long story short as you can see it on line on www.horseandcountry.com I think it is episode 13? my beautiful girl followed a cow around the round pen. Work did not stop there but it gave me the foundations to commence further training with her. For two months I walked her past cows on our lane twice a day allowing her to make intrisic decisions. From there I rode her past the cows twice a day, riding in the dually. Now we ride past herds of cows with no problems, yes she looks but she has no major issue with them now.
Calypso has become somewhat of a local celebrity-she had half a page of the local newspaper dedicated to her and recently was in the spot light of our local vets magazine.
I am so grateful to Monty and Kelly and the natural horsemanship team for their support and will endeavour to spread the word!
Regards
Sallyann and Calypso
