Hi Can anyone give some advice I have a 19 year old gelding who always blows his bell out before I tighten the girth.. I am always gentle and have checked for injury or tender spots. Most days I struggle to get the girth up to one hole either side. Eventully he deflates but sometimes we are talking 15 to 20 minutes!! I walk him around to distract him but it has become quite a bad habit. I have thought about buying a bigger girth but then it will be too big once he deflates. Any advice would be appreciated.

Sorry I meant his belly not bell!
Hi
Your girth must be long enough so you can attach it even if your horse blows a lot.
We you cinch, don't put pressure, because this way the horse reacts by blowing.
make the horse walk a little bit so the saddle finds its place on you horse, then tighten but still without pressure. then ride your horse 5 minutes, walk and trot, and then tighten for the last time. If necessary, you can add holes in your girth to accommodate an important change.
Also check that your saddle if adapted to your horse. This kind of reaction usually occurs when the horse is not comfortable with the saddle or when you tighten too quickly (which does not seem the case)
Hope it helps

Every horse blows their belly out while cinching the saddle, I'm not sure why but they just do. I usually cinch up snug then walk him out 50 feet or so and cinch again before getting on. I rarely have to cinch more than that but in my experience it's just part of riding a horse. Sorry I don't have a better solution for you but don't get too frustrated, everybody has to deal with this problem.
Thank you guys I will work on that!
Hi there! Buy a longer girth! Warmest Ann Lindberg
