Best Reins for a Very Green Broke Horse.

Hello!

I have a very green broke 2.5yr old who I am starting to ride (6 rides so far) western/trail ride. I am wondering what is the best rein set up to use at this point and what are the best ways (equipment, bits, martingale, two rein?) to train for a nice head set and when can I start to do that? THANKS!

Hello!

We always go bitless bridle and never use martingales. Martingales are ostensibly for safety, but really just end up as an un-ecessary tortuous device/treatment.

Hello!

ok, thank you. I can see you would not recommend using any equipment riding to gain a low head set. I think Monty's video on double lounging with elastic side reins might help me out with head set and eliminate unnecessary equipment on the trail! I am really just wondering about what the most popular reins are when riding a green horse? but thank you for the information.

Hi brook,
Invite your green horse to carry his head in a relaxed fashion, by giving the reins when he is low with the head. This will stimulate his whole body to work with non-tense muscles and this way you'll be able to start his training in a pleasant way. No equipment can do this, only your hands can. Of course it's important to go with the horse's movement, so you'll not disturb him, but let the low headposition be the best of all places to be, and he'll thank you for it!

A young horse doesn't develop the muscles necessary for a balanced body over night. Miriam is right and no artificial gadgets are needed, only your hands and the awareness of rewarding by softening at the right moment. Once he's balanced he'll be on the bit and nicely rounded. Meantime, have fun and don't tire him and overtrain.
