A win with my Dually Halter!!

Hello! 100 lessons completed 150 lessons completed

Hi all! I just wanted to share a good experience i had with my brumby, Buster. Today i had a bit of a frustrating session with him. I didn't lose my temper but i was frustrated :-P I am just at the beggining of starting him under saddle and am finding he is very difficult to get moving! Even a step is a big issue. I eventually got him to take a step and then got off. I didn't feel it was a success though so i decided to do some work with the Dually. It was then that i noticed his back leg was seizing up under him. I think it is growing pains/tightness in his hips. So no wonder he didn't want to move with me on his back. My fault for not noticing! He was a bit uncooperative on the Dually too due to his uncomfortable leg i think. End of session :-(
Later tonight i went out to feed him and our mini and thought i would do just a few minutes on the Dually to see if he was feeling any better. We had an ok start and then i remebered watching an episode on Horse and Country where Kelly Marks showed how to back a borse, how to hold your hand to be precise. When moving forward Buster will NOT trot with me. This is something i thought we could remedy tonight. So i concentrated on looking forward and holding my hand as kelly suggested for a 'one, two' kind of a punch combo if you like. I walked quiker and gave a 'one, two' and guess what?.....I got a TROT!!!!! we did a couple of laps round my little paddock and he was becomming very willing to come up off the Dually and trot with me. I was so pleased with that win that it made the rest of the day fade into the distance.
Yay for the Dually Halter!!

Great news Janelle - well done! Wow - you are actually getting on Buster now! That in itself is such an achievement so don't ask for too much at this early stage and don't be disappointed. You have achieved so much so soon. Just enjoy sitting on him and if he will take a few steps then that is good but not necessary. It will all happen in due course and the more ground work you do with the dually and lunging with the saddle the easier it will be. Have you mastered the double line lunging yet? I am still to do that and am guilty of still lunging on the single lunge line when Tricka needs to be more responsive. I don't hold the lunge line tight as you are meant to so hopefully that means that it is not as bad on her spine as Monty demonstrates. However, if she is not responsive to my legs for walk, trot and particularly canter then I go back to the lunge and give her the commands on it with lots of transitions. Then she is better when I am on her. She is reluctant to canter with me on her but I fear that is because her back is still sore so I don't push her. I have a chiro coming this afternoon so I will know more after that. A great post to read!

Hi Janelle I am bringing up this old thread this evening as I wished to say well done to you and Buster. I checked out Ronda's youtube site "mystarmajestic" as I was concerned for her and hoped to see if she was still videoing as she has been very quiet on forum. Two great surprises for me - Ronda's recent video on Liberty training with My Star which I enjoyed and then all of yours with Buster on the same site. Really enjoyed watching your latest videos - you and Buster are so good together and it is obvious how much you trust each other. You have made incredible progress with him and he is looking just great. It was so good to see your calm sensible approach to training and to see how well Buster was responding to it. I have been checking out some pretty ordinary training videos lately since I finished watching the 'horseandcountry.tv"videos and yours were such a refreshing change. You have really presented your videos well too which makes them so easy to watch. Ronda I liked yours too and it was great to see you working with My Star just a week ago - she is doing so well. No more snow so that must make everything so much easier for you both. Do hope all is going well with you both - we miss your valuable contributions on forum.

This thread has failed to come back to Dasboard so I am just adding another comment to see if it will return now.
