18th month old filly who loves a bit too much!

Please upload your photo

I have had my filly for 6 months since she was a year. I am now able to pick all her feet up, tie her up, brush etc. My propblem is in the field. She loves being with you and always comes straight over to see you, so she has a stroke and a rub for a while but when you go to walk away she follows you and if you take no notice of her she rears up at you! I am sure its an attention thing but unsure what to do. Any ideas???

Hi Laura and Dave, sounds like you did a good job so far. I suggest you take a Dually-Halter, start practising with your filly to respect your space. Make her come forward and go backward on always smaller cues. Going backwards when you ask her will soon give her an idea of where her space ends and where your space starts. Make it comfortable if she respects your space and uncomfortable if she doesn't. Of course she's young, so don't overdo it, but this is a lesson for life. You will both benefit from it if this basic is clear between the two of you. This can be real fun! Let us know how you're doing.

Hi lauraanddave1965 ! (by the way 1965 is my year of birth) I agree with miriam. I am working with an 18 month old colt who I am interested in to purchase. Picking up feet is still something we are working on to make it really easy and comfortable for both of us. Great that you achived that goal already ! I have been working with the Dually about four weeks / three times a week and "Hero" respects my space pretty well. I can send him backwards just with my body and just sometimes I need the Dually's help. Did your filly ever lean with all her weight on the leg when having been asked to lift it up ? I do not fight with him but reward him for about 5 seconds of good lifting and just take my time. Would love to learn about your experiences re lifting up feet. VioBerlin

Thanks Miriam for your advice. I am seeing Monty at Towerlands UK on the 6th Nov so shall purchase a dually whilst there and get going with it.Ill keep you posted on how its going.

Hi Vio, my filly (Marmite) did lean to start with I thought it was because she didnt want it picked up but I have later realised that she could quite work out how to transfer her weight (I think!) Now she realises and transfers her weight as I head towards the next foot. I do this every day without fail and now its just one of those things that happen when she has had a brush. You have done really well with the dually I hope I can manage ok on my own! Will keep you posted.

As you may know, the Duallyhalter comes with a DVD, so watch that before you start to work, it is very helpful. Have fun and lucky you to see Monty so soon!
