Hello! Me English is pretty bad, since I'm from Sweden. And I'm only 14. I've done some join ups, especially with my mothers Arabian horse. He is born 2003, and we still haven't got the time to ride him in.. But he is sensitive and he shows big reactions when we do the join up.
Well I should get to the point. I got an Icelandic horse, and I've tried doing a join up with her, since she is new. But the problem is she only goes on a small circle around me (about three meters or so). When I try doing the rope thing, she bucks and is always really close hitting me with the hooves. Sometimes she even try running at me and bite. It's not fun at all, and I don't know how to get her "away" from me/sending her away. Got any suggestions?
/Maja
Mama it does sound dangerous for you. She doesn't seem to respect you and I do feel that you need to have a professional trainer to help you with her. Not sure if there is a Monty Robert's trainer in your area but someone else from Sweden maybe able to help you out here.
Maja - apologies my I-pad changed your name on me!
Hi Maja, she's a very strong mare, you need help with her, I would not do join up with her for now, but work instead on groundwork & manners to build your bond with her. It is too dangerous for you to do join up with her at the moment.
The Arabian's reactions are normal for this breed, they are very athletic, sensitive & reactive, but as long as he's not trying to hurt you, that isn't a problem.
Hi Maja,
From the suggestions you received here, you can understand that your Icelandic mare might be a little too strongheaded for a person your age. This doesn't mean the two of you cannot build a relationship of trust, you absolutely can, but it takes time and quite some learning on your side. Remember we are all trying our best to communicate in the horses' language.
Some of us have come quite a way, others may need some more excercise.
Since you are in Sweden and you mention not feeling too secure in Englisch, may I suggest you get in contact with Ann Lindbergh ( a Certified Instructor), she speaks your language and lives in Sweden, this might make it easier for you. You can find her under the button "Instructors" at the top of this(any) page on this website.
Now it's not clear how "new" your Icelandic mare is to you, but she will still be new until you start learning her language and only do things with her where the two of you feel safe and can have fun together. When your level of learning goes up, you'll find a way to send her away, without risking getting kicked or attacked by her. Don't rush it, work on yourself and your knowledge of the language of the horse.
Let us know how things work out for you and your mare!
Miriam
Hej Maja, and for all of you - english will be followed but we start with Swedish! Hej Maja, vart i Sverige bor du?
Vänligen Certifierad Instruktör i Sverige Ann Lindberg
Hi Maya, you are more then welcome to contact me here in Sweden. I am the Monty Roberts Certified Instructor based in Skurup the south part of Sweden. Your horse might try to tell you something, might have been trained in a specific way - nevertheless you need to be careful and remember it is the horses language we need to learn from them. Please contact me and I will se what I can help you with. It is wonderful to have you here on EOUni!
Warm Regards MR CI Ann Lindberg
