What will be their destiny

Hello!

What will we do with our horses in case of :
-old age
-reaching maximum level the horse can give, but we want to reach higher
-unable to be ridden
-we are not able to ride anymore
What will be their destiny ?

That is a fantastic question.
My answer has already been thought out and activated.
If I die, my horse (horses) go to my granddaughter.
STAR will defintely oulive me and again my granddaughter will look after her.
There are times I cannot ride but I think of STAR as my huge pet and we do and will just spend time together.
I am fortunate enough to have a daughter who has knowledge and space for STAR. She also has horses already and has said I will look after her and you, don't worry.
She's a pretty cool kid, my amazon giant, she's over six feet.

I have always been a keeper, if i buy a horse i keep it for the rest of his/her life. I do know people who find it easy to just sell on their horse when it has served its purpose but i just can't do that. If my horse is unable to be ridden well they can just enjoy life with me. The two times i have been pregnant with my children i could not ride for over a year each time as i don't ride when pregnant. My horse at the time just enjoyed his time off too. I did a little long lining and just enjoyed grooming him etc. i think of them in the same light as my dog...would i sell her because she is old and might die in my arms? No! My TB died in my arms at the age of 21. I hope he enjoyed seeing out his days in health and happiness with me.

Yes, this is something that is always on our minds especially as we grow older. So far I have been fortunate in being able to keep my horses once I can no longer ride them. They are not saleable except to a nackery and I couldn't bare to give them away in case they end up there. I did try to find someone who would like to breed from my beautiful, very well bred warmblood, Ouyen, but as she was lame and also had a club foot the expense of breeding from her was prohibitive. One girl was ready to take her but I am pleased that fell through as sadly her property was burnt out in the bushfires 3 years ago and Ouyen would have been burnt too. Luckily her home and her family were OK but a number of her horses had to be put down. This is a really tough question as it is hard to find a suitable home for an aging or broken down horse. If anything happens to me I have asked my daughter to have the vet euthanase my older horses and I will do this myself when their life is no longer enjoyable. Pie is now beginning to feel the winters and as both her two front legs are lame she may have to go this year but only if we are both ready. I did it with my first horse 10 years ago when he was 29 and it wasn't too bad as I knew we had to say good-bye as he had started bleeding from his bowels. He had been well up until then so he didn't suffer. He went to sleep in my arms and then I buried him next to the dam he loved here on our five acres. Tricka is younger and may outlive me so I have plans to send her to a lovely animal loving family in the country near Cowra. I know they would love her and take care of her, hopefully they would take Uggs too as a companion. I think Chester could find a good home and Nicky's previous owner would need to take care of her again. How depressing!! A very good question but hard to answer without tears in my eyes!

Sonny will go to my barn owner if I pass away. He will be the last horse I own so when he gets too old to ride, I will probably be too old to get on him so we will retire together. He is 7 and I am 38 so we have a good 25 years or more together. When he gets too old and passes away, I will have him cremated and take a walk in the woods on our favorite trail and scatter his ashes.

Hello!

@Country girl
you are still very young, so I hope you will not pass away before your horse. Also my horse Degas will be the last horse I will have. When he will be 30, I will have 71 years, that fits good. The horse I had before I gave to a close "Agri turismo", where he spend a nice time in company in 36 acres. I decided to give her away, because she was all alone and I felt very pitty for her. I often went to see her. One year ago the new owners told me, that she died. But she has had a nice life with them, very lovely people with animals.

I have converted some old videos from VHS into digital. They are 14 years ago. Funny to watch them after a long time
