I know this isn't about horses, but i was wondering if anybody knew of any good dog trainers? Like any "Monty Roberts" for dogs? Or if any of you just have any good advice on dog training, because i'm having troubles with my new puppy. I've been trying to figure out how to do some stuff with some of the broader things Monty has been saying, and combining that with training tips for dogs that i already know or have found on the internet. Sometimes this works, but a lot of the time it doesn't... (the things it doesn't work with are mostly when i'm trying to teach him NOT to do something) Tips? Thanks a lot!

Hi Linda...ah puppies!!
Cesar Millan is a highly recommended dog trainer who uses his knowledge of dog behaviour and psycology to help troubled dogs and just to help dog owners train their dogs. His idea is that dogs need a pack leader and they need a job to do, whether that be going for a walk or just being obedient. You can find hid dvd's online under 'dog whisperer, cesar millan' I think with puppies (it's been a while since i had one!) the key is repetition, reward and having realistic expectations of where your puppy should be at. You could also have a look online to see if there are any dog training schools in your area. I think it's also important to remember that dogs and horses are oposites in almost every way! For example, looking a horse in the eye means 'go away', looking a dog in the eye is an invitation to come. One is a prey animal, one is a predator. All that said, You should definately take Monty's No Violence motto with you in your dog training!
Hope some of this helps and good luck with your new puppy!
Janelle
Thank you so much! This really helps :)

I know the frustration you are having. Puppies are like two year olds, you can tai your self blue and they have no idea of what you are saying. The one overriding concept that I have gotten from Monty Roberts is Patience. Puppies learn very slowly and like horses they will adopt a bad habit quicker than a good one. You will make mistakes in your training, we all do, but don't dwell on it just learn from it. If the puppy is not doing what you are asking it to do, don't keep asking in the same way. Once you have a good bond with the puppy and he becomes more willing to learn you are going to have a lot of fun. The most fun I had with my poodle was teaching him agility training. The enthusiasm he shows is phenomenal.
Cheers
LindaR,
I have had several dogs and the one thing I have always believed, an untrained dog is like loaded gun in untrained hands.
Ceasur is great and his training methods are similar to Montys'.
We had a Huskey/Wolf mix and he was about 2 when we were given him, he was pretty easy going but did not like to be lead with a proper heal.
My youngest daughter and my husband could not lead him without being pulled. When I walked him I used a humane collar(a neck chain would not work on a strong dog), at the beginning and he understood I wanted obedience and would accept nothing less.
As we were walking he would look up at me for my body language, totally in tune.
When my daughter left home to live on her own she took him with her and there was a time he saved her live, he was very protective of her.
That training really works.
Raise a good obedient, on the dime dog, and you will both be happy.

dear linda - horses are prey animals - Monty Roberts knows the Equus! Dogs are preditors - Ceasar Milan knows "canin talk"! They both have the essence of understanding the language of the animal - this is the key! You also have the brittish dog listener Jan Fennell - all 3 highly recommended, warmest Ann
Ceasar Milan is worth listening to, watching and reading. I have always had dogs and was fairly competant in training and handling. When I discovered Ceaser the dogs and I became radically more effective and happy in our training and living together. Ceasar says he's not a trainer, and it's true, but training dogs tricks and modifying behavior really takes on a whole new dimension with the ceasar way of relating to the dogs. He's helped me so much.

Hello Linda
I am not sure if this reply is too late and you have found help. I have had dogs the best part of my life and believe in the concepts Monty uses applied to dogs. Ceasar Millan is excellent but ihave had the priveldge of attending seminars and courseswith the man who advised Ceasar. i know him as dennis and he lives near Antwerp. If you are interested i will get his full name and address. Regards puppies It is crictal that the puppy be exposed to every thing he may encounter with only positive reactions in the first 13 weeks of his life. After that it is very difficult to iron out remedial problems but not impossible. In those first 13 weeks you act as parent. The puppy is taken to all places and given little treats to reinforce the positive result.Show him all types of animals, take him to the zoo if possible, walk him in the town and as i did take them in the coffe shops. I walked my pup on bridges and even rode on boats. Give them a toy box for the same amount of time but then after 16 week take all toys away After that you give and take the toy and instigate and end the game. That now makes you pack leader. You take ownership. i have a sheet simply writtenexlaining rules of and maintianing pack leader position.i can let you have a copy if you wish. Have a wonderful time withyour new companion. My pup has just turned a year old and like you i have a wonderful time with her and the horse. We are very lucky. Jane
