I'd like to see a lesson on how to get the first halter on when you have a field/stable to work in, the only one I can find in lessons has a very expensive gate type of eqipment that most of us don't have.
Cheers

Good suggestion Mary. Certainly needed for the older untrained horse but my feeling is that the only solution is the one you have been taking with Apollo. Wouldn't it be great to have some of the equipment Monty uses.
It would Maggie, that expensive gate in the pen would be perfect, lol! I'd like to be able to take it off and get it back on no problem, he's okay with my arms round his neck but as soon as the halters in my hand the heads up and he steps backwards, I'll just have to persevere for now, thank you x
Hmm, difficult one, the old fashioned way was to put a bit of feed in a bucket then put the halter in on top, so when they put their head in to eat you can slip the halter up over their head!! Can be easier said than done..
Hi. Monty's horse crush is designed to keep everyone, including the wild mustangs they so often work with, safe. Why don't you use one of the back corners of his stable. Have someone with you to hold your line so he can't just walk away. The walls will prevent backing up. You MUST work really carefully. If you put too much pressure on him you will loose some of the trust you've worked so hard to build up. Your goal will be to put a second, normal halter on & off over his blue one. You can then try putting the dually on in this more conventional way. See you Thursday. Cheers, Jo.
Thanks guys, I really need to keep working on this. I think Jenny may be too nervous to hold him in the stable for me, I don't want him getting nervous, I've tried myself but it's pretty hard to hold him and try and get the head collar over, he goes back till he's in the corner then back forward once I'm at him or he just goes round and away, if I try to hold him too much he gets really nervous.
I'm also unsure as when to start trying to tie him and where? We were in the school one day as I'd sedated him to try and bandage the leg and he pulled off 1st time and took the post off the second time, I've not tried to tie him anywhere since.
Cheers guys ;)
See you Thursday Jo x
Hi. DO NOT TRY TO TIE HIM. I'll help you on Thursday- show you how to do it. Then get someone you know you can direct exactly to help you. If necessary, I'll come over for the first few times. It's really important that Apollo has at least some trust in those handling him so he gets through this, intact. You've put too much time & effort into building up his trust to have some idiot destroy that effort. Cheers, Jo.
Thanks Jo :D see you then :D
