Hi can anyone help please?
my pony has a small rough patch of what seems to be dry flaky bits in her fur,i thought it was dried in dirt crumbs so tried to brush them out but little bits of fur came out as well the area feels very gritty.
she has recently been seen by the vet nothing then, she was bathed and treated for lice [she didnt have lice it was just a precaution]at the end of summer, there is only 2 of us on private land and she is in her own pad.i was wondering if maybe she need an suppliment?,i do have to be carefull what i give her as she is prone to putting on weight and it has taken me years to finaly get her to her right weight.
if anyone has any ideas as to what this might be and if a suppliment is the answer i would be very greatfull to hear from you thanks
Hi Karin,
I was wondering, does she have more than one patch?
Also, if she did not have lice, why treat her, it can be very harsh on the skin.
Now saying this she could have a drug eruption from the lice meds.
Alopecia may have occurred. The lesions can take up to six months to disappear.
Using a mild soap(even one for dogs) and then completely rinse several times will ease the skin irratation.
Hope this helps.

Hi Ronda
thank you for replying,my vet has now seen sky and is not unduly concerned, says she has no idea what it maybe but it is deffinately not lice or cushons related, the fact that sky is not in any way trying to itch at it is also good news, however something obviously isnt right so i have been advised to clean area with mild solution of hibbisrubb and moniter closely over next week or 2 any change and they will take fur samples and send them off for testing, will let you know.
Hi Karin,
I'm glad Sky is OK.
Would you mind telling me what is hibbisrub, I'm not familiar with that product?
Will this prevent anymore hair from falling?
STAR had a bad reaction, this summer, to a new bug spray I tried, she lost a patch of hair about 10 inches in diameter.
I washed it with mild soap and threw the spray away, she is very sensitive to a lot of things, poor little thing.
It's terrible that they are not able to say to us, hey I have.... or hey that..... sometimes I wish they could talk.
Under all her black hair is very black skin, amazing how they heal so beautifully when given the chance, ah!
Have a great day,
Ronda
Hibiscrub is a surgical antibacterial wash that is used in hospitals for surgeons and theatre nurses to scrub up before operations. It is a useful thing to have in your horse first aid kit as it's great for cleaning up wounds or any suspect skin issues when diluted with water, can also be used for cleaning hooves thoroughly to prevent thrush. And you can use it yourself to clean your hands before and after treating.
Thank you emlaw,
I will look into that, my youngest daughter is a nurse. Perhaps she'll know of something similiar, here in Canada, that I can use.
Sounds like a great product to have on hand.
Thank you,
Ronda
I forgot to say that a vet recommended it very dilute for giving horses an all over bath if they are getting sweaty and itchy too, it works like a gentle shampoo. I am sure your daughter will know of the same or a similar product - it is pink in colour!
