Although not 100% necessary a round pen helps control the process of join up more easily! at the price of them I know on the budget I've got I'd not be able to afford one for some time yet, so I am always on the lookout for wood being thrown away etc...
After several weeks of hunting and fetching I now have enough wood to build a solid round pen very similar to Monty's :D I wasn't sure about what footing the pen could have, but then noticed in one of Kelly Marks books that she used to use straw In her round pens, so I'm going to give that a go.
I can't put a proper sand base down as I'm only renting land.
More work and plenty of bent nails need straightening before I can reuse them. Lol
:D
I've had to make do with a very simple round pen - electric fence, not connected of course, although not exactly solid, i've never lost either of my girls, the sight of the tape has been enough to keep them in. I'm not suggesting that is a safe environment for everyone, just that's all i've had. Also had to do it on grass, so it's only usable when the ground is safe enough.
Good luck with it Mel. It's a lot of work to do when you don't own the land but hopefully you will get lots of use out of it. I am pleased to have the one I built for my Shetland. Pity it is only 13 metres in diameter and not 15 but it's Ok and great for Chester.
Lol, tried the electric tape with Barney, he just walked right through it. if it's not on he knows and feels free to go where he wants. Shetland s eh!
When I eventually leave this current place I'm going to need a lorry with all the wood etc that I have, take it all down and set back up at the next place :D
I'll post photos on my blog when I've built the round pen so those not on Facebook can see too, might give some ideas for others.

well - Shetlands are a law unto themselves HeeHeeHee!!!
just an idea for you Mel, can you design your pen to be built in sections then joined together, it'll be much easier to take down & rebuild.
Hiya, I've thought about doing it in sections, but don't think it will be stable enough with the wind we get across our fields. I'll do it though so it can be taken down fairly simply when we eventually move. :D
Mel if you can get some posts, you can attach the sections to the posts. Then when you leave, take the sections down and pull the posts out of the ground. You would need help to take it down and load it up though.
Thanks Amberpony, I managed to pick up some recycled wood today quite long so they'll make good posts. just got to start putting it all together now :-)

Should keep you entertained Mel - have fun! Perhaps you could use the wood to make a series of gate size panels then attach these to iron posts with the posts on the outside for strength and the top of the iron posts just below the top of the panels for safety reasons. This way the panels could then be easily removed for your next venue.
Thanks Maggie, I can image what you said and will try to do that! X
