Preparing Horse For Shots

Hello! 100 lessons completed 150 lessons completed 200 lessons completed 250 lessons completed

Fear Of Needles

I would like to see a lesson on how to get the horse who is Preventing and Fixing a Problem with Fear Of Needles. We have to do a Blood Draw for Coggins Twice a Year and Vaccinate Yearly.

The horse needs to be able to let a Stranger use a needle on him.

Last week the vet came. Since my horse is afraid of needs they put a stud chain over his nose. (this Is Not an open discussion on how they were wrong.)That is a given.

If I could prepare my horse by teaching him that needles are not the end of the world, my Twice Yearly Coggins test would be a much better experience for all involved. I have until October to fix his Fear Of Needles.

Hi both of you. Fear is the same, be it of needles, clippers, trailer loading ( the current series of lessons ) or plastic bags. Some horses (& humans for that matter) fear the unfamiliar so, do you have a Dually head collar? Have you done Join up? Have you spent time teaching your horse to stand still? Have you progressed from just standing still to staying still whilst you are some distance out in front? These lessons are here on the Uni. Can you control your breathing, your body language? You can practice these skills without a horse, almost anywhere. Once you've built up a calm, trusting relationship you can work with a needleless syringe & their favourite treats in a bucket to make the whole experience far less traumatic. My Max has cushings & needs to give blood samples twice yearly so I understand your situation. However, I'm lucky in that he is a very willing partner & copes really well. In addition to the lessons I recommend Monty's book "From My Hands To Yours". It gives a step by step guide on how to overcome these fears. Rearing & striking out are signs of applied force rather than understanding & training. You both have work to do - these horses need your help. Keep us here at the Uni updated on your situations & we will help & support your efforts. Cheers, Jo.

Hi all, we took your suggestion and last week Monty did a great video lesson to help your horse with the 'nasty needle' fear! Watch in the coming weeks...the line up is being determined now based on the editing.
