Today I had the most amazing join up experience! We got a pony for my daughter. We were warned that the last people who bought him, returned him within the week because they couldn't catch him in the field. I had recently watched Monty's lessons on join up without a round pen, figuring join up may have to happen in the field if he was going to be difficult to catch. So sure enough, as soon as he saw me come out to get him he took off around the field. It was hard work, took 45 minutes and a lot of patience but it paid off! I was able to get him through all stages, and he chose to join up! My husband was astounded! He was telling me to give up and admit defeat. But I could see the pony start to go through the stages, and I knew that he would come around. The really neat thing was that later, after I took him back to the field he at first looked like he was going to run away from me, but suddenly stopped and came back for a rub between the eyes! Learning from Monty's books and university has been so rewarding for me and my horses! My other horses were hilarious watching the whole scenario play out... they even helped me by not allowing him to use the whole field!

Thanks for sharing this! Well done! It is amazing how it works isn't it? No doubt he will run again next time you go to catch him but the process should be shorter!
Well done for persevering! Great work!
Thank you! Yes, I'm guessing that we will repeat this routine a few more times - each incident reducing in time until he realizes that nothing bad happens when he comes in with us. I think sometime in his lifetime he's had bad experiences with new people. He is a very old pony, 30 years, but you'd never know it! He is mostly retired with us only used for short pony rides for my daughter who is 5 years old. Hopefully he'll soon learn that she just wants to smother him in love and he'll relax and love her back. We don't want him stressed and will go out of our way to give him a comfortable retirement. Any old pony or horse who has lived and worked all those years deserves it!
Lucky pony!
