This is so important not just for the "normal" rider, but even more so for all the handicapped riders who need a ramp of some sorts to get on.
On that note, I worked at a riding school where we had this Fjord mare who had too little patience to stand still for very long. But she always "parked" herself by the ramp when it was time for the handicap-lessons, and didn't move a muscle until the rider was safely onboard.
Sometimes they just know! :)

I couldn't wait to give it a go ...! I had a mixed response with appaloosa when I asked him to take one step toward me with his back end ..I think I did it too soon after working on the long lines and he had just got good about turning with his head and forehand and walking away from me on a light touch, so I think I will leave it a bit before I go back to asking for this other manouver...He did understand after five tries which was excellent but i did not want to over do it and maybe change his understanding of the mouthing on the long lines .
I have had multiple back operations and need a mounting block to be able to mount without possible harm to my back. I am currently training my five yr. old quarter horse to steps and a platform my husband built. She also would move a step away. This is a great lesson! Right now she and my 2 yr. old baby just moved to a farm where there is pasture. Today we plan on introducing them to it and the other horses in the herd. Any suggestions or comments? I am not able to see how to start a new topic on it. But I am excited in the next week once they adjust to the new place to get back to training with the mounting block method shown. Irishwabbit
I watched the lessons several times and then went to try it out on my two young mares and they both got it with in a day or 2 and now they are both pros at it all I do is cluck and they side pass right upto the mounting block, this is one of the best lessons learned for me. I show everybody how I taught them, because when they see me doing it, they say how did you do that. Monty thanks for the knowledge!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
