Hello! 100 lessons completed 150 lessons completed 200 lessons completed

I would like to see a uni class on the differences in training and join up of the miniature horse verses a larger horse as I am seeing many and don't know how to make the adjustments that might be necessary
thank you,
Peg

Hi Peggy,
When you think about it a horse is a horse. Same mentally... The only difference is it is smaller.
Smaller horse smaller distance to travel. Make a smaller round pen or allow it to travel a shorter distance around your 50 foot round pen.
Same instructions apply, only you won't mount them or saddle them up, of course !!
Hope this helps.

Hi Peggy, i have a miniature who we bought as a pony for our kids. I have done successful join up's with him and used a red dually with him - it only just fits! I found him to be no different except that yes the travel distance seemed a little shorter with him. He was just the same to work with as my bigger horse though :-)

I've done J-U with mini's too. I found it good to make sure they could see my eyes by making sure the forelock was pony-tailed (sometimes they have so much hair!), and when giving forehead rubs, to crouch down to their eye level so the horse can see you coming without lifting up his head. Remember, a relaxed horse is one with a lower head set. With the little ones, we forget we are so much taller that what work we do with them requires them to always be looking UP. I've also found that since mini's usually get petted a lot on their faces that some don't initially welcome the forehead rub. In that case, I rub or scratch the withers to start with and as we get acquainted, I then ask for the forehead. I have found most mini's go into communication very quickly. FYI, an enclosure about 25 feet around usually works well for a round pen. Good luck!
