Sorry if i a bit forward but i would really like to know how Monty or anyone else for that matter starts the young horse giving to leg pressure and sorry for being an idiot on how i phrased my comment
thank you
Christian
There are a number of lessons that Monty has in the University. I would start with the lessons on Move Into pressure and Moving away from pressure The next set of lessons are on leg queues builds on the concepts of pressure.
I know it is confusing when you start a young horse, but if you go slowly and make sure the horse understands what you are asking, I am sure you will have a great partner. The more ground work you put in with a young horse the more successful you will be in the advance stages of training. A lot of long lining or lunging with the dually halter and teaching the horse to bend and flex his body and as well as the neck. Monty has not covered teaching a horse to double but it is one of the most effective ways to keep your horse light in the bit. Sitting still in the saddle you gently pull the horses head around until he touches your stirrup and hold it there until he relaxes you can also use the same technique to flex his head at the pole. That teaches the horse collection.
I do those exercises with my horse every time I ride him. I also continually ask him to back up. Sometimes one or two steps and other times half way across the arena.
Good luck and have lots of fun with your horse. It will be very rewarding for you
Cheers
