Hey all,
so i wasn't really sure if i should post that here but I was so amazed by this experience I thought i'd share it with you.
So i've been obsessed with horses pretty much my whole life. In my family, nobody cares about them, they don't dislike them, they just don't care. My mom however, was terrified of them. Always had been. To the point where she could't even drive into the riding school when I was little, just seeing the horses was too much.
Fast forward 25 years or so, two month ago, i bought my first horse. A lovely arabian/paint mix 2 year old filly.
As you can imagine, I was so excited I wanted to introduced her to my mom. I have no doubt in my mind the only reason she agreed to it was because it was my birthday and she was trapped (mwahahahahaha)... :)
So we get to the pasture, at the time i'd been working with Dayka for a month, already had really good follow up in the field and just a really good bond with her already and she was in a pasture with 3 heavy draft mares. So i was confident it would go well. I gave my mom the basics, don't look her in the eye, don't wave your arms, step away if you feel scared, all of that, and i explained why we have to approach horses as we do. Basically trying to explain how and why i was using monty's method.
We get to the horses, Dayka comes to greet me as usual and first thing i loved, she then went to my mom, very gently touching her nose to her. At this point, my mom is still definitely unconfortable but starting to realise maybe horses don't eat people after all. We start our walk, at that point i was still working on getting Dayka to walk quietly with me, she was a bit nervous that day but overall it went pretty well. After about 40 minutes, we get back to the field and my mom actually volunteers to brush the thistle out of her mane.
That alone was incredible, we're talking about someone who couldn't even touch a horse before that. But it gets better. The next day, we couldn't have been out for more than 10 minutes before she asked me if she could lead the horse herself. Back at the house that night, she asked to watch videos on the uni, she thought it was so amazing to be around horses. And the next day, we actually cancelled what we had planned because she wanted to take the horse out for a walk !!!
I mean, I personnally had no doubt the material we get here and all of monty's work can change our relationship with horses, but it's amazing to see that someone who's always been scared of horses actually just didn't understand them and once you do explain to them what horses are about and how to communicate with them they realise what beautiful amazing animals they are.
40 minutes of basic introduction to monty's work and a living example of the results you get with even just the start of it and there's a nearly 60 year old phobia that turns into an actual really good time. And from the phone calls i've had since then to see how Dayka's doing i'm pretty sure we have a new horse enthusiast :D
Well done and thanks Monty !!!
Aw, what a lovely experience Lucie, thank you for sharing it. I hope it continues to be magical for you all.
Great story! Thanks for sharing!
Hey - lovely to hear your horse is helping your Mum beat her demons. Cheers, Jo.
Hi Lucie and all,
What a wonderful experience and the start of a whole new era!
I once had a similar story with my father, who was a WW II victim, who had a great fear of horses. I took him to the stables, where my mare boarded. I had of course told him a lot about my studies with Monty etc., but he kept at large from the mare, never realising he came close to a gelding called Gipsy. The gelding decided he needed to know the man in front of his boxstall and showed big interest. So slowly my father let him smell and they shared breaths. Before I knew it they were the best of friends...
From that moment on my father never missed a chance to get aquiainted with any horse he met and send me pictures of his new friends! He insisted to accompany me on my first trip to Monty's farm in 1999, as a tribute to what he had learned through me from Monty. Beating you demons...
