I have a 11 year old Mustang that I rescued last spring but because he had a bad skin issue I have only started working him with the dually this summer. He was not handled much at all and very distrustful of humans. Now he leads, has his barefoot trim, baths and grooms very well.We have a standard height round pen that I am trying to join up with him in but after about 2 roungs he jumps out. I was thinking of using a loungh line but am fearful he will try to jump and get the line tangled in the round pen and pull it down behind him. Please give me some input. Thanks

Hi bcs_5357
If you want to achieve Join-up, using a line is not a real option, you'd want your horse to come to you of his own choice. Since your roundpen is not a save enclosure, consider finding another field, paddock or anything that he'd not be able to jump out of, to start your conversation with your mustang. Building trust, as you describe above, has many faces, you seem to have come quite a way with him! There are many ways of deepening trust without doing actual Join-up. You could desensitize your horse to many things, using advance and retreat, and so building further trust in your relationship. Invite him to walk over a tarp, using the lake-and-stream method Monty uses in some lessons on this Uni.
Have fun and keep us posted,
Miriam
