I'm always reading other peoples blogs, websites watching youtube and seeing what people's opinions are. Many express concerns over round penning and Join-Up stating it's unnatural and all that's happening is the horse is being run till it's tired.

I've recorded the last couple of weeks the Join-Up process of our horses now we've moved to a new bit of land and put 2 herds together. So we have 2 hierarchy geldings, both very head strong and 2 lead mares, both very experienced in leading the herd. You'll see in the video one of the geldings become passive and give in to the one who becomes leader over the whole herd.
.
The video is about 25 mins long, but shows you some good bits of the herd Join-Up process, including circling, head dropping and ..... Lots of running, but rather than in a round pen they've got 6acres to run!!
.
All these things are what Monty would have seen in his younger days when he used to watch the wild horses. I hope it helps too for people to see how the horses interact with each other to resolve differences and give an idea how to integrate horses together.

Really interesting video Mel, I hope a lot of people see it.

I'm curious, why do you think Raisin chose Seaton and Jenny ? She grew up with the rest of the herd but seems to immediately "identify" with the herd of two. Do you think that's personnal preferences ? because of her young age, not having as much history with the bigfer herd ? some other reason ?
Jenny showed to be a lead mare so I would say she went for the one showing leadership. Seaton is about 7 years older than the little herd and Jenny 13 years older at 24. It would be a good question to put to Monty as it's the first time I've seen that happen.

Thanks for making that video Mel it's fabulous to see that happen between horses! The herd dynamics are so interesting!
It's still happening and nearly a full herd. Glad you enjoyed it & Thank you.
