My Join-Up® Experience

Join up with older trained mare

I am new to the university. I have always been in awe of Monty and his ability to communicate with horses. I am so glad to have found this. I am also a firm believer in not using whips. I was frightened by my trainer when I was younger who would chase my horse with a whip to get it to "do the right thing". If I was that scared of what was going to happen I can only imagine how the horse felt. I have never carried a whip when riding since. Anyway I have a wonderful 19 year old Morgan mare. I have had her for 5 years. I am her second owner. She is completely broke and sound (done by previous owner/breeder). I am not sure how they trained her. She rides both english and western. She is also trained to drive. I was wondering if I can do or should do join-up with her? Will it enhance my relationship with her or hurt it? I feel that she doesn't really have any problems. I feel very comfortable putting my 4 year old on her, and that she will take care of her. Also should I put a dually halter on her when she does great in a regular halter? Thanks.

Hello! 100 lessons completed 150 lessons completed

Morgancourt i will start by saying it is wonderful you found your way to monty's methods and to the uni :-) welcome!
On the subject of join up with your horse i would say definately have a go! Monty recommends we start off with well trained calm sensible horses to use his methods. I had a thouroughbred off the track when i first discovered monty, and i had owned him for about 8 years. Our first attempt at join up was a perfect success and even though we already had a good relationship doing join up just enhanced that bond. Just be careful not to do it too many times with one horse. 4 to 6 times is recommended i think.
Keep us posted...i look forward to hearing how you go with it if you decide to :-)
