15 Dec 2012 I was trying to do join up with a draft horse. I was able to get her use to the round pen and move about 8 times one way but when I turned her I had a hard time keeping her moving but I got her to do it 8 times. When I turned her for the last time she just stoped and would not move unless I pulled on her halter. Can anyone tell me what I done wroung? I done everything that Monty says to do in the lesson/

Hi
Have a look at the Martin Clunes video on here - Monty is working with Martins Clydesdales and you may get some ideas about how to move a draft horse forward. Mimi is right about the bag and Monty uses on in the video. However, it may be worth watching the Join Up videos again too to pinpoint and check if your positioning is correct: eight times in each direction sounds a lot, but it's more about the communication signals - were you getting them from her? I have watched the Join Up videos over and over again and still learn something new. Good luck.
Thank you all for your help. The reason why I done it 8 times is because it is a small round pen. I did not think about the Bag on a stick thanks. She had all the signs that you are suppose to have but with out the movement it does not matter to much. I started watching the videos again and will watch the ones you suggested.
Draft horses won't move that much as others do. Their reaction time is slower and to bring them to canter is not always possible. Don't ask too much of your horse. You are very lucky that you have been able to move him that much, at the end he was probably bored.

I took riding lessons on a draft horse once, and he was a bit difficult to make him keep going. You just have to be patient. I would suggest looking at that lesson when Monty does Join-Up with a draft.
bag on a stick is a lifesaver. I once worked with a cob who had been desensitised to it though so had to use rocks in a jar (lots of noise). I have also used a string with bottles & cans tied all the way along it (lots & lots of noise!) at the suggestion of one of the certified instructors who has a very energy-conserving arab.
