Recently did join up with a gelding aged 21, called Hazzard. He was lovely and amusing. His expression seemed sceptical like 'is this human really speaking my language after all these years?' He did everything at a very slow pace and when he tightened his circle to get closer it was very small. :) When I went passive he took his time to decide and just when my patience were being quite tested he suddenly took two strong steps towards me, touched me with his nose and sighed. It was lovely. The funny part was I had used hay bales to make my rectangle corral an octagon and when I invited him to 'follow up' he stepped toward the hay bales and took a mouthful instead! lol I gave him a gentle tug on the dually halter and then he willingly followed me away from the hay, across the corral. :) I love doing join-up with horses!

Hi K.D.,
What a touching story about your Join-up with a 21 year old!
I remember one of my first join-ups, with our at that time 20-ish mare Fantasy, that I had ridden already for years by that time. I still feel her thinking " So NOW you know!", and come to me to the centre of the pen. She was the one that inspired me most to learn more, because of the trust there had been before Join-up and the deepening ever after. She lived until the age of 27, had to be put down 2 years ago, she's still a part of me!
Miriam
Thanks for Sharing about you Senior Friend.Sure sounds like what my guy would have done.
I wish I had done Join-up with my Life Long Friend of 27 years. I lost him last August. Through the years we had a Great Relationship because we comunticated with our minds.
I do believe we could have had Even More Fun if I had Read Monty's Books during that time.
BTW My New horse was also excited that I was making sense with my gestures lol
Thanks Miriam and Amberpony :)
It's amazing the grace our past horses gave us - seen so much more clearly, now that we understand better what we didn't understand back then. My first horse was Major and he was a handful. I only just began learning about the dually halter at the end of our sixteen years together (I met him when he was six and I was twelve). His eyes often looked hard and angry - but when I used the dually halter and gave him that reward rub done properly - his eyes softened and focussed on ME, like they had never done before. I'll never forget that moment and I'm grateful.
